1976 Sculpture - Embrace

1976 Sculpture – Embrace

This abstract piece of sculpture in wood represents the passionate embrace of a couple. I created it with chisels from my blacksmithing. The sculpture is wood, in fact it is made from a part of an old railroad trestle bridge. The original material was a 14″ X 14″ X 9′. I cut it in half and laminated the pieces together prior to sculpting. I think it is Douglas Fir, but am not certain.

I was unaware of the potential of using the lighting to further reinforce the theme implied by the name. My thanks and gratitude to whomever used the shadows to create an embracing couple.

The piece is in the permanent collection of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. It is on display in the Student Center.
