Albrecht Durer – Man of Sorrows, also known as The Bagpiper
An extremely kind Turkish gentleman was generous enough to allow me to scan this print. It is very small. Dimensions: plate: 11.6 x 7.5 cm, (4 9/16 x 2 15/16 in.). The detail is virtually microscopic and the control displayed by Durer is nothing less than virtuosic. To Albrecht Durer – Man of Sorrows is a theme displayed in other of his works. He was 43 when he created this print.
This print is also known as The Bagpiper. Compared to this print on Wikipedia Commons it can be seen to have more damage and a small amount cut from the upper right hand side. (Cropped leaves) Although it has been kicked around in its life, like the bagpiper, I like this version of the print very much compared to some of the ‘cleaner’ ones easily located online. I was very fortunate to be able to scan it. Undoubtedly it will be the only of Durer’s works I will handle in my life. When you have handled a masterpiece, even a modest one, everything changes.
