1980 Two Falcons

I created these two falcons sculptures from fossil walrus ivory. They are a prairie falcon on top and a kestrel below. Both are American birds of prey. Fossil walrus ivory exists on Alaska’s northern shores. It is also found near the shores in the ground and permafrost. Over the centuries or millennia minerals leach into walrus tusks. This resulting in the typical browns, butterscotch and ocher colors. Occasionally blue and green fossil walrus ivory is found. The color is caused by nearby copper or nickel.
