Welcome to Ensightful - Muqarnas مقرنس

Muqarnas مقرنس are an Islamic space-enclosing system of striking subtlety and complexity. Muqarnas have the unique property of being made of a small number of unique block types which can be combined in a large number of ways (how large is currently unknown) to create striking architectural elements. For several decades I have been exploring both traditional and novel forms which can be composed from muqarnas مقرنس blocks. They were used traditionally in domes, portals, to decorate squinches and below the parapets of minarets, to name a few places. My work displays that, in addition to these traditional muqarnas مقرنس applications, there are many previously unknown muqarnas مقرنس forms which can be used architecturally. These include families of spiral staircase, families of 'flattened' domes, arched structures, etc. Furthermore, I am exploring the use of muqarnas مقرنس as a general purpose space-enclosing system which can bridge and connect numerous disparate domes, etc. into a single unbroken surface of muqarnas blocks.

Among my discoveries are a variety of rules which allow the extension and expansion of muqarnas forms.
